Abstract

1460051 Sharpening knives WILTSHIRE CUTLERY CO PTY Ltd 26 March 1974 [26 March 1973] 13405/74 Heading B3D [Also in Division F3] A blade sharpening device 5 comprises two sharpening elements 14 each defining a respective sharpening edge 16, the elements being arranged in overlapping relationship so that they define a sharpening recess 15, and pivot means 18 connecting each element to a support structure to permit each element to move relative to the other. The device may be incorporated in a scabbard having a housing 2 providing an access opening 4 within which the device is supported by a carrier 6 mounted on a pivot 7 and urged to an upper position by a spring 8. A reaction member 13 has a part 13 acting as a guide for the upper edge of the knife and is mounted on a pivot 12 on the carrier. The carrier has a recess in which mounts 17 for the sharpening elements 14 are located on pivots 18. The pivots may be parallel to one another and thus inclined to the sharpening edges 16, or parallel to the sharpening edges. The elements may move about the pivots to positions determined by stops 19, 21 and may be biased by springs to a central position. During insertion and withdrawal of the knife in the scabbard, the elements pivot first in one direction and then in the other. In the embodiment wherein the pivots are parallel, the angle between the edges alters during the pivotal movement whereas it stays constant in the embodiment wherein the pivots are parallel to the edges.
