1464633 Mechanical presses CINCINNATI MILACRON Inc 18 Sept 1975 [18 Sept 1974] 40668/74 Heading B5F In a mechanical press comprising in the press slide 10 or bed a piston-and-cylinder assembly 15, 19 containing pressurized fluid 18 through which the operating force is transmitted, mutually co-operating elements 25, 23 on the piston and cylinder limit their relative displacement due to the fluid, a deformable element 31 being disposed with the assembly 15, 19 between abutment surfaces on the slide or bed so that upon extension by the assembly when the fluid 18 is pressurized the element 31 yields to avoid overtensioning the cast iron &c. of the slide or bed. As shown the assembly 15, 19 is in the slide 10 of a press driven by a crank-shaft the connecting rod 11 of which is held against the piston 15 by a nut 14 forming the top abutment surface of the slide. Splines 23, 25 form the abutments on the cylinder 19 and piston respectively. During assembly the piston splines 25 pass between those 23 on the cylinder before the splines are aligned and the assembly retained by a key. Oil 18 is pressurized by an air-operated pump 20 and may escape through a relief valve 27 urged into a closed position by compressed-air acting on a diaphragm 30. Alternatively, the valve 27 may be replaced by a manually-operable stop valve to release fluid in the event of press jamming, or the oil 18 may be connected to a pressurized reservoir into which it may flow at pressures above the reservoir pressures, returning on the up-stroke.
