Abstract

1464524 Supporting cylinder liners in IC engines CATERPILLAR TRACTOR CO 20 Jan 1975 [28 Jan 1974] 2445/75 Heading F1B In a cylinder bore 30, between the top deck 18 and its lower end, is formed a shelf 54 upon which a cylinder liner 38 rests via a sleeve 72 and yieldable spacer 76 with a predetermined yield point. As a cylinder head 14 is bolted on to the block 16, the liners 38, which protrude above the top deck 18 to different extents, are forced down, the spacers 76 deforming after taking up varying loads. During thermal cycling of the engine, the sleeves 72 act as stiff springs taking up expansion and contraction of the liners. A further shelf 28 in the block may prevent radial movement of the liners. Alternatively a flange at the liner head may fix against the bore rim near the top deck to prevent radial liner movement (not shown).
