Abstract

1464384 Nuclear reactor powered plant UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 2 Aug 1974 [23 Aug 1973] 40066/73 Heading G6C In a plant in which heated coolant from a nuclear reactor is used to heat a hydrogencontaining gas, an intermediate heat transfer circuit is provided using as the heat exchange agent a hydrogen-free fluid containing an oxidizing agent which forms an oxide surface between the intermediate circuit and the reactor coolant circuit so as to inhibit diffusion of hydrogen into the reactor coolant circuit where it would react with the graphite moderator. The reactor coolant may be helium and the intermediate heat exchange agent may be helium containing up to 20% by volume of oxygen, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, or steam. The hydrogen-containing gas heated may be the hydrogen-containing steam in a hydrogenmethane reforming process.
