Abstract

1,156,368. Purifying carbon dioxide. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. 29 Dec., 1966 [30 Dec., 1965], No. 58076/66. Heading C1A. [Also in Division G6] Carbon dioxide which is used as a coolant in a graphite-moderated nuclear reactor and to which a small proportion of methane has been added to inhibit corrosion of the graphite, is purified by converting the water content to H 2 by reaction with CO, eliminating H 2 by diffusion, and oxidizing CO to C0 2 with oxygen. The reaction between H 2 O and CO may employ a Cu-Zn catalyst, and the oxidation of CO to C0 2 a Pt, Pd, Cu, or copper oxide catalyst. Diffusion of the H 2 takes place through tubes made of Pd alloy into another circuit containing C0 2 in which the H 2 is catalytically oxidized to H 2 0 which is removed by condensation. Reference, has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,108,512.
