Abstract
1464148 Making gas discharge panels INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 23 Dec 1974 [16 Jan 1974] 55588/74 Heading C1M A method of making a gas discharge display panel comprises assembling a panel comprising partially overlapping glass plates 10, 12 sealed together to enclose a gas volume, each plate having on its inner surface conductors (21-28 and 31-40) covered by a lead glass dielectric, the conductors and dielectric terminating at or near the outer edge of a non-overlapping region of the plate, and removing the dielectric coating from the terminal regions of the conductors by etching with perchloric acid solution. A preferred method comprises the steps of:- (a) coating soda-lime-silica glass plates 10, 12 with successive layers of Cr (1000 thick), Cu (10,000 ) and Cr (1000 ); (b) removing parts of the metal coating by etching to form parallel conductors 21-28, 31-40; (c) heating in an atmosphere of 90% (by volume) N 2 and 10% H 2 which contains water vapour to passivate the metal by formation of a chromium oxide surface layer; (d) coating with a dielectric lead glass; (e) assembling the plates and sealing them together to form a discharge panel; (f) removing the lead glass from the terminal regions of the conductors by etching with 10% by volume perchloric acid solution; and (g) removing the outer layer of Cr by etching with potassium ferricyanide solution.
