Abstract

1463292 Protection arrangements INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT CO Ltd 28 Jan 1974 [27 Oct 1972 7 Dec 1972] 49757/72 and 56547/72 Heading H2H In order to protect a superconducting winding from damage should part thereof become normally conductive an auxiliary winding wound together with the superconducting winding in the same sense so as to be closely and physically associated therewith and electrically connected thereto so as to act as a heating element to bring the superconducting winding rapidly to a normally conductive state should any part thereof become normally conductive. A superconducting winding 1 is provided with a protective arrangement in the form of two auxiliary windings 2, 3 which are placed in close proximity to the winding 1 and connected thereto electrically at one end only. The windings 2, 3 are connected to one another by interconnections 4-7. Thus if a section X of the superconducting winding 1 goes normally conducting current will flow in the windings 2, 3 to generate heat thereby driving further sections of the winding 1 into normal conduction. The winding 1 may be made of a niobium-tin or a niobium-zirconium alloy and the windings 2, 3 and the interconnections 4-7 of copper. If desired the auxiliary windings may be made of superconducting material. In a second embodiment only one auxiliary winding is used and in yet another embodiment the auxiliary winding is connected in parallel with the superconducting winding by way of a pair of reversely connected Zener diodes.
