Abstract

1462953 Electrolytic purification of liquids ANDCO Inc 31 Jan 1974 [16 Feb 1973] 4625/74 Heading C7B An ionizing medium containing contaminant ions capable both of forming an insoluble Fe compound or complex and an insoluble hydroxide, is purified by electrolysis using an anode of Fe, Fe alloy or an insoluble Fe compound, at which anode an insoluble Fe compound is anodically generated, and an inert cathode at which the said insoluble hydroxide is cathodically generated whereby an insoluble compound, species or complex of Fe and the ion is produced. The ion may be Cr (as Cr04 =or Cr 2 O 7 =) or CN, others being listed. The insoluble product may be filtered or settled out, optionally aided by a polyelectrolyte coagulant e.g. a polymeric reaction product of acrylamide, maleic anhydride, HCHO, K 2 S 2 O 8 and (NH 4 ) 2 SO 4 . A plurality of mono- or bi-polar electrodes may be used. The anodes and cathodes may be of the same material, permitting polarity reversal. Media treated include cooling tower waste, Cr-plating rinse bath, Cr phosphatizing solution, Al anodizing solution and foundry wastes and may be aqueous with or without alcohol. Alternate cathode and anode plates 79, 81 may be supported in grooves 73 in holder 71 and have angled bases resting on bar 77. Bus-bars 95, 87 connect the electrodes
