Abstract

1461931 Grippers EATON CORP 8 Jan 1974 [10 Jan 1973] 00829/74 Heading B8H [Also in Division F1] Hydraulic system for the actuation of clamp arms 16a, 16b mounted on the lifting carriage of a masted lift truck moves the arms together to engage a load at a first pressure and then grips the load at a second higher pressure. The system comprises an actuator 10 connected between the arms and having a cylindrical housing 34 with a main piston 38 movable therein with a hollow piston-rod 36 connected thereto for movement through one end of the housing. A secondary, smaller piston 48 is also movable in the housing and is connected with a piston and into the hollow piston-rod 36. In operation fluid is supplied from a pump P through a valve 31 and pipes 26 to a chamber 40 and via ports 44 to a chamber 42 to retract the piston-rod 36 and move the arms towards one another to engage the load. When the arms engage the load the full pump pressure is applied to the pipes 26 which is sensed by a sequencing valve 22 to supply the fluid through conduits 28 to a chamber 52 to act on the piston 48. The area of the piston 48 is larger than the piston rod 46 hence the piston moves upwardly to advance the piston-rod 46 into the chamber 42 and so increase the pressure of the fluid therein and in the chamber 40 whereby to grip the load at the second higher pressure. An exhaust chamber 50 is located between the pistons 38, 48 and is connected by pipes 30 to a reservoir 32, but may be coupled to the pump by valve 31 to move the arms away from one another.
