Abstract

1461855 Ni base weld deposit RUCKER CO 15 March 1974 [5 July 1973] 11588/74 Heading C7A [Also in Division E1] A well blowout preventer ram block is provided with a work hardenable alloy deposit on the edge thereof engaged by a pipe joint when the block is in a closed position, suitable alloys including those in the range containing: 0-10 wt per cent C, 8-20% Cr, 10-20% Mo, 2-6% W, 0-10% Fe, 1À2 max % Si, 1À5 max % Mn, and balance Ni (usually at least 45% to ensure an austenitic structure), examples being given of specific alloys falling within this range. The deposit is suitably applied by welding techniques, as in its stress-free condition has a Rockwell C-scale hardness not exceeding 22 so that it does not suffer from hydrogen embrittlement in a hydrogen sulfide atmosphere. The main body of the block is formed of an alloy with a hardness not exceeding Rc22.
