Abstract
1461439 Cooling liquids by contact with gases RICHARDS OF ROCKFORD Inc 18 June 1974 [18 June 1973] 26953/74 Heading F4K [Also in Division B2] A nozzle for projecting a liquid (e.g. water) as a stream of liquid droplets into the atmosphere in order to cool said liquid, comprises a tube 12, Fig. 2, of constant internal diameter and having an axial length at least as great as its diameter for forming a sheet B of liquid, and an inverted frusto-conical member 11, having an outer end 17 of diameter greater than the internal diameter of tube 12, and an inner end 15 upstream of the outlet 16 of the tube, and adapted to form a conical sheet A of liquid along the outer surface of member 11, so that in use the sheets A and B intersect on member 11 upstream of outer end 17, thereby to create droplets, member 11 being spaced from the outlet end 16 of the tube 12 to define an orifice 10 of area substantially less than the area of tube 12, and both the outlet end 16 and the outer end 17 having abrupt edges. Member 11 is preferably a truncated right cone, and it may be adjustable relative to the tube 12, to vary the size of orifice 10. In one embodiment, Fig. 4, the nozzle is used in a spray unit supported on a float 30. A propeller 40 fixed to a shaft 41 driven by an electric motor 44 propels liquid upwardly in tube 12. An inverted right frusto-conical member 19 is fixed to the shaft 41 by a fitting 60 which allows member 19 to be moved along shaft 41. In two alternative arrangements the member may either be non- rotating and fixed relative to the tube (12<SP>1</SP>), Fig. 7 (not shown), or rotatably mounted on the shaft (41<SP>11</SP>), Fig. 8 (not shown), so as to be rotated by the liquid flow &c. The nozzle may alternatively be used with a spray unit having fixed supports e.g. a pier, and the pumping unit may be remotely located.
