1461007 Low phosphate detergent compositions PROCTER & GAMBLE CO 6 Sept 1974 [7 Sept 1973] 39016/74 Heading C5D A low-phosphate detergent composition comprises (a) 10-20 weight per cent of a phosphate, phosphonate, polyphosphate or polyphosphonate builder salt, (b) 3-30% of an anionic, non- ionic, ampholytic or zwitterionic hardnessinsensitive detergent (hardness sensitivity is defined with reference to a specific test), (c) 0À5- 3% of a C 2-4 alkylene oxide polymer of molecular weight 2,000-40,000 and (d) 0À5-3% of a water-soluble copolymer of maleic anhydride and ethylene, styrene or a vinyl C 1-4 alkyl ether or a salt thereof. Phosphate builders specified include sodium pyrophosphate and sodium tripolyphosphate. The hardness-insensitive detergent may be a sulphonated fatty acid ester, a fatty alkyl ether sulphate, a sulphonated C 1-3 alkyl fatty alkyl ether, an olefin sulphonate or tallow alcohol-ethylene oxide adduct. The alkylene oxide polymer may be polyethylene glycol. The maleic anhydride copolymer may be a sodium salt of copoly(maleic anhydride/vinyl methyl ether). The composition may also include an alkali metal bicarbonate, sodium silicate, an alkali metal carbonate sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, sodium sulphate, an alkali metal chloride, a hardness-sensitive detergent, e.g. sodium alkylbenzene sulphonate, a fatty acid mixture, sodium perborate, brightener, perfume and water.
