Abstract

1460976 Shielded conductors BOSTON INSULATED WIRE & CABLE CO 8 July 1974 [27 July 1973] 30114/74 Heading H1A [Also in Division B5] A shielded electric cable comprises: (a) a central elongated conductor; (b) insulation surrounding the conductor; (c) a shield consisting of a laminated tape surrounding the insulation to form a continuous conductive surface, the tape comprising a flexible non- conductive base strip, a metallic foil adhesively bonded to the base strip, and at least one longitudinal drain wire to conduct away any stray or unwanted electrical current in continuous electrical contact with the foil, and (d) an insulating outer layer surrounding the shield. The drain wire(s) which may be of flat or circular cross-section, may be interposed between the foil and the base strip; alternatively, the wire(s) may be disposed on the opposite face of the metallic foil to the base strip and held in continuous electrical contact with the foil by a non-conductive holding strip which encloses the wire(s) and is adhesively bonded, e.g. by a polyester to the foil along both sides of the wire(s). In the embodiment of Figs. 1 and 2, the cable consists of wire conductors 11 each protected by inner insulation sheaths 12 and surrounded by insulation filler 13, the foil laminate 14 comprising the drain wires 15, e.g. of copper or tinned copper adhesively bonded between a non-metallic base strip 16, e.g. of polyester, vinyl or asbestos and a metal foil 17, e.g. of aluminium and helically wound around the filler 13, the laminate 14 being enclosed by an electrically insulating layer 20, e.g. an extruded covering or a glass braid finished with a silicone or polyimide lacquer.
