Abstract

1460943 Coating silicon-steel KAWASAKI STEEL CORP 2 April 1974 [11 April 1973] 14660/74 Heading C1M In forming an electrically insulating magnesiasilica glass film on an oriented silicon-steel sheet, magnesia particles are applied to a surface of the sheet as an annealing separator, the sheet then being coiled and annealed to form the magnesia-silica glass film, the magnesia used comprising 1-20% by weight of particles which pass through a 100 mesh sieve (Tyler Standard Sieve) but are retained on a 325 mesh sieve (i.e. these particles are of size 44-150 microns). The magnesia used, which may be obtained by calcining magnesium hydroxide or magnesium carbonate, is preferably applied to the sheet, as an aqueous slurry, by dipping or spraying. The magnesia is preferably applied so as to give a coating of 4-10 gm./m.<SP>2</SP>. The slurry may contain methyl cellulose as an additive. The silicon-steel sheet may be annealed, before application of the magnesia, at, e.g. 820‹ C. in a H 2 /N 2 atmosphere. The annealing to form the glass film may be carried out at, e.g. 1200‹ C. in an atmosphere of hydrogen.
