1460806 Automatically adjustable couplings DUCELLIER ET CIE 1 April 1974 [17 April 1973] 14339/74 Heading F2U A centrifugal advance device for the ignition timing distributor of an i.e. engine, which advances the ignition above a first predetermined speed of rotation, holds the advance constant over a range above this and then reduces the advance as speed increases further comprises masses 8 and 9 pivoted at 6 and 7 on a plate 5 which is rotatable relative to a plate 2 which rotates with a driving shaft 1 and is coupled to plate 2 by a spring 24 which holds a stop (on pivot 7) against a surface 30a of plate 2, the cam 13 being rotatably mounted on the driving shaft 1 and having a cam plate fixed to it with pins 14 and 15 which engage in recesses 16 and 17 of the masses. A spring 18 connects a post 22 of mass 8 to a lug 20 of the cam plate. On rotation of shaft 1 clockwise to above the first predetermined speed the masses pivot against spring 18 to rotate the cam plate and advance the ignition by engagement of recesses 16 and 17 with pins 14 and 15. The ignition stops advancing when pins 10 and 11 of the masses abut ramps 3a and 4a of apertures 3 and 4 in the plate 2. The ignition is held at this advanced position until the speed rises sufficiently for the pins 10, 11 to move along the ramps 3a, 4a against springs 18 and 24 which decreases the advance. A spring 19 is shown between mass 9 and the cam plate 12, this is optional and may differ in its strength from spring 18 to modify the advance (Fig. 5, not shown).
