Abstract

1,095,017. I.C. engine valve gear. J.R. CRIBBS. April 27, 1966 [April 28, 1965], No. 17960/65. Heading F1B. In I. C. valve timing gear a resilient drive coupling is arranged between the cam-shaft and the crank-shaft so as to bias the cam-shaft toward an advanced position relative to the crank-shaft, the cam-shaft moving toward a retarded position when the coupling is transmitting an increased torque due to acceleration and/or operation at increased speeds. Crank-shaft 16 drives the cam-shaft 25 through gear 14, chain 18, gear 38, pin 46, spring 42, pin 44 and hub 22. When rotation is stopped spring 42 maintains pin 46 at the end of slot 48 farthest from pin 44. As the speed of gear 38 increases pin 46 moves towards the other end of slot 48 thereby altering the relative angular positions of gear 38 and cam-shaft 12. In another embodiment a gear (56) Fig. 3 (not shown) is rotatably mounted on a cam-shaft flange (52). The drive is transmitted through a spring (62) between bolts (64) mounted respectively in the gear (50) and flange (52). In another embodiment a leaf spring 88, Fig. 5, abuts an adjustable elliptical stop 94 whereby the spring-loading can be varied.
