Abstract
1504136 Fuel injection pumps; starting fuel injection engines CAV Ltd 3 April 1975 [25 April 1974] 18037/74 Headings F1A and F1B In a radial cylinder rotary distributer fuel injection pump wherein the pumping plungers 20 are moved inwardly by respective rollers 29 cooperating with an angularly adjustable internal cam ring 30, the outward strokes of the plungers are determined by the abutment between the adjacent ends of the rollers 29 and a plurality of pivotable links 57 disposed to one side of the cam 30. During normal operation of an engine supplied by the pump the angular position of an annular stop member 60 is such that internal lobes 61 thereon maintain the links 57 in their inward positions. In these positions the links 57 and a fixed ring 52 on the other side of the cam ring 30 limit the outward movement of the plungers 20 and thus the normal maximum amount of fuel delivered. To provide excess fuel for starting the annular stop member 60 is moved angularly to allow outward pivoting of the links 57. This adjustment of the stop member 60 is effected by moving a plate 64 having a toothed tongue 63 engaging teeth on the outer periphery of the member 60. The plate 64 is guided by a squared bolt 66 passing through an elongated slot 65 therein and movement is imparted thereto by an elongated member 49 guided to move perpendicularly to the plate 64 by a slot 73 therein which receives the bolt 66. By rotating a stop control 46 an eccentric 47 thereon co-operates with a recess 48 in the elongated member 49 to move the latter, this movement causing movement of the plate 64 by the cooperation between an inclined surface 71 on the member 49 and a pin 70 fixed to the plate 64. A spring 67 urges the plate 64 to the normal position in which an upturned portion 69 abuts an externally adjustable screw stop 68. Once moved to the excess fuel position the plate 64 is latched by a leaf spring 75 which springs into a position behind an extension 76 on the plate 64. When the engine reaches a predetermined speed the output from a feed pump 17 causes angular adjustment of the cam ring 30 to retard the injection timing and cause a pin 77 to lift the leaf-spring 75 away from its latching position. To stop the engine the stop control 46 is displaced so that an end 50 of the lever 49 closes a throttle 26 controlling the feed flow into the pump. In a similar manner the throttle 26 is moved towards its closed position if the stop control is operated during normal operation.
