Abstract

1460449 Heated platen DEFENCE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR 22 Feb 1974 [22 Feb 1973] 8708/73 Heading B5A Moulding apparatus comprises at least one electrically heatable platen and means to compress moulding material thereagainst, the platen comprising a matrix material reinforced with one or more carbon fibre layers and at least two electrical terminals each comrising a metal strip within and along one edge of the platen and electrically contacting at least one carbon fibre layer so that the conductive path between the terminals is formed by the carbon fibre layer(s). The platen may be used for the vacuum or light pressure moulding of thermosetting resins. As shown, a moulding assembly comprises a container 1 of glass fibre reinforced epoxy resin having a flange 2 with a groove 3 with a sealing ring 4. The platen 5 is supported by a thermally insulating block 6 and comprises layers of glass fibre and one layer of carbon fibre 12 in an epoxy resin matrix. U-shaped aluminium sheets separate platen 5 from the container sides which have an evacuation port 10 and an electrical plug 11. The container is sealed by a fabric reinforced silicone rubber sheet 8 held by a steel frame 9. The assembly may be used for the vacuum forming of glass fibre reinforced epoxy resin.
