Abstract

1460408 Bitumen/polystyrene composition COMPAGNIE FRANCAISE DE RAFFINAGE 20 May 1975 [24 May 1974] 21632/75 Headings C3N and C3P A composition consists essentially of (a) 99-20 parts by volume (absolute), measured at 25‹ C., of a mixture consisting essentially of (i) 10-40 parts by weight of polystyrene; and (ii) 90-60 parts by weight of a bitumen having a penetration of 40-400 tenths of a millimetre at 25‹ C. and a softening point at or above 80‹ C., the sum of the parts (i) and (ii) being 100; and (b) 1-80 parts by volume (absolute), measured at 25‹ C., of a mineral filler, the sum of the parts of (a) and (b) being 100. The filler may be crushed limestone, asbestos fibre, vermiculite or iron fillings. Styrene may be polymerized in situ in the bitumen and the resulting mixture then mixed with the mineral filler. The composition may be used for damping vibrations.
