Dilating-instruments.- A dilator comprises a number of prisms grouped about a central rod and connected at one end by links to the rod and at the other end to a member sliding thereon. In the form shown, sixteen prisms b are grouped about a central rod a and are provided at each end with pivot members c connected by links d to a cap e fixed to the rod a and to a sliding member f respectively. The member f is hollow and encloses a spring f<1> and a plate g fixed to the rod a, and is screw-threaded internally to engage a nut h. On unscrewing the nut h to the position shown in Fig. 3, the spring f<1> forces the sliding member f upwards, so that, the prisms b are moved radially away from the central rod. The prisms are connected in pairs by slotted links l engaging pins i, so that on dilation, they are turned about the pivot members c to the position shown in the upper part of Fig. 1. In alternative methods of operation, the nut h is removed and the rod a engaged directly by a ring k, or by a Bowden wire, the sheath of which is connected to the member f, or by a rod sliding within a rigid tube.
