Abstract

1460261 Ink-drop printers A B DICK CO 10 Jan 1975 [14 Jan 1974] 1163/75 Heading G4H An ink-drop printer 20-38 used for printing bar codes on a substrate 40 incorporates means 42-54 for removing one or more drops immediately following the first of a stream of drops for printing each bar, so as to compensate for the effects of aerodynamic drag (Figs. 1-2, not shown). Since drop 1 has to travel through undisturbed air it is slowed relative to the immediately succeeding drops, resulting in a curved drop stream, or possibly the fusion of drops 1 and 2. Drops 2 and 3 are therefore left uncharged and fall into a collector 38, while drop 1 falls into alignment with drops 4-8 (of an 8-drop bar). This is achieved by applying a step voltage 56 (58 shows the prior art) to the charging electrodes 28, 30; voltage 56 is obtained from counter 50, converter 53 and summing amplifier 54, counter 50 being reset by data source 52, 46 at the start of each bar, and logic 44, 48 ensuring that each bar has no more than 8 drops.
