Abstract

1460233 Spinning polyamide filaments MONSANTO CO 24 June 1975 [22 May 1975 25 June 1974] 26705/75 Heading B5B A polyamide, in particular nylon 66, is meltspun into a plurality of filaments which are quenched and then stretched in a continuous process under the following conditions:- (i) The spinning speed of the filaments is controlled by control means so that the speed is at least 2285 m/min. (ii) The filaments are fed into a stretching zone at a time between 0À002 and 0À25 seconds after solidification. In the embodiment illustrated in Fig. 1, the spun filaments 26 are quenched with an air jet, given a finish by roll 42 and then passed around roller 28 and roller 30 to orientation apparatus 32. Rollers 28 and (optionally) 32 are used to control the tension in the filaments before drawing and hence their speed. They are preferably run at constant torque, rather than constant speed, and may run either counter to the direction of the filaments or in the same direction.
