Abstract
1459775 Coke ATLANTIC RICHFIELD CO 19 Dec 1973 [26 Dec 1972] 58778/73 Heading C5E Coke is produced by (a) contacting a sulphurcontaining hydrocarbon feedstock, preferably petroleum fractions a major amount of which boiling above 550‹ F., containing at least 1 wt. per cent Conradson Carbon Residue with at least one peroxy oxidant in the presence of a catalyst comprising a metal of Groups IVb, V and VI (defined) or mixtures thereof so as to oxidize at least part of the sulphur in the feedstock but not the carbon, and (b) subjecting the product from step (a) to coking conditions to produce coke. The oxidant is selected from organic peroxides, hydroperoxides, peracids or inorganic peroxides. The catalyst metals are Ti, Zr, V, Ta, Cr, Mo, W or mixtures thereof, preferably being used in the presence of mono and polyhydroxy alcohols.
