Abstract

145,901. Ellis, G. April 9, 1919. Panels and panelled work.-Frames for doors, parts of furniture, &c. are made from narrow strips of wood halved and joined at their intersections. The various strips 5, 6, 7 are notched in a machine set to gauge the notches and assembled and glued in a form as shown in Fig. 4, panels being at the same time inserted in grooves g in the stiles. The surfacing is then glued or cemented to one side using headless pins if necessary, stiffening pieces inserted, and surfacing glued to the other side. The door &c. is then surfaced and reduced to correct size in a sandpapering machine. In doors of hard wood the outer strips may be of the same wood as the surface and of the total thickness of the frame and are rebated for the edges of the surfacing which is mitred or butted in the rebate. Doors subjected to hard wear are strengthened at the edges of the plywood by metal guards cemented to the edge or otherwise secured. The parts may be made by producer forms each member in continuous lengths to be afterwards converted to size and assembled.
