Abstract
1458314 Regenerating used lubricating oils INSTITUT FRANCAIS DU PETROLE 11 April 1974 [12 April 1973 2 Aug 1973 8 Nov 1973] 16287/74 Heading C5E Used lubricating oils, e.g. motor oils, containing dissolved metal compounds are regenerated by circulating the oil along a first face of a membrane permeable to the oil and having a cut zone in the range 5000-300,000 and collecting a purified oil on the second face of the membrane. The oil can be diluted to 10-50% by volume with a solvent such as propane, butane, pentane or hexane; the passage of oil through the membrane can be assisted by maintaining a pressure difference across the membrane. The treatment can be carried out in a plurality of stages as shown in Fig. 2 in which a stream 11 of oil feed and solvent is passed into the first stage I and the portion 12 of the oil and solvent is passed into a second stage II, the residue from the second stage is separated at 13 into residual oil, which is discharged at 15 or partly recycled as the stream 31, and solvent which is condensed at 25 and recycled. Solvent 16 is passed through stages I and II to collect the purified oil as streams 34 and 20; alternatively the mixture of purified oil and solvent from stage II can be passed through the valve 18 and used to collect the purified oil from stage I. The membranes used in the examples are (a) a copolymer of acrylonitrile and sodium methallylsulphonate, (b) a mixture of a copolymer of acrylonitrile and sodium methallylsulphonate and a copolymer of acrylonitrile and vinylpyridine quaternized with methyl sulphate, and (c) cellulose ester; other suitable membranes are listed.
