Abstract

1458150 Navigational display apparatus; course recording apparatus VEREINIGTE FLUGTECHNISCHE WERKE FOKKER GmbH 13 Dec 1974 [14 Dec 1973] 54045/74 Headings G1F and G1J A navigational display system for a vehicle, particularly a ship, comprises a sensor system 2 for sensing predetermined parameters relating to the motion of the vehicle, radar equipment 1, a computer 12 receiving information from the sensor system 2 and the radar 1 and including a mathematical model 14 simulating the vehicle behaviour, and a display apparatus 16 controlled from the computor 12 via control means 10 to indicate the actual position 17 of the vehicle and a predicted course for a predetermined time ahead, shown as a curve 18. The display apparatus 16, typically a large area daylight display, also shows the positions of other vehicles or obstacles, as detected by the radar 1. A plotter 21 plots the vehicle track on a chart. The sensor system 2 includes a Doppler speed sensor 3, a wind speed and direction sensor 4, a vehicle drive system state sensor 5, a rudder position sensor 6, a gyrocompass 7, a displacement gyro 8, and a rate gyro 9. Thus the line 18 on display 16 represents the future course of the vehicle with the control settings and external conditions pertaining, for a predetermined period ahead. A digital display 20 may indicate, e.g. the most appropriate manoeuvre for collision avoidance, or, if the computer 12 stores a set of traffic regulations, any infringement of these regulations.
