Abstract
1458027 X-ray tubes; neutron generators PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 21 Dec 1973 [8 Jan 1973] 59461/73 Heading H1D A high voltage vacuum tube (e.g. X-ray tube or neutron generator) comprises an anode and a cathode surrounded by a metal sleeve 1, the cathode being mounted on a metal support 31 joined to the sleeve 1 by insulator 2 with groove 22 to accommodate metal screen 32 which prevents flash-overs originating from the lower edge of the support. Emitted electrons charge the side walls of the groove and decrease the field at the edge of screen 32. Advantageously, the groove may also be metallized and connected to support 31 or screen 32 (both at the same potential). If metal support 31 extends sufficiently far into the groove, screen 32 may be dispensed with, then the metallisation of the groove must be provided. The insulator surface may be corrugated with the groove in a crest. The vacuum joint between support 31 and projection 21 may be by soldering to apremetallization. An externally heated soldering joint to accommodate differences in thermal expansion coefficients is preferred.
