Abstract

1457677 Comminuting apparatus; mixing apparatus TECHNICON INSTRUMENTS CORP 11 Sept 1974 [13 Sept 1973] 39597/74 Headings B1C and B2A Comminuting and mixing apparatus comprises first and second relatively movable cutters 30, 56 relatively rotatable about an axis, each cutter including a plurality of knife edges arranged about the axis and cooperating to provide shearing action, the first cutter 56 being floatingly mounted for axial movement towards and away from the second cutter 30 and having means on it to move it towards the second cutter when it is running and to move it away from the second cutter element when operation stops. As described the rota table cutter 56 has hydrofoil surfaces 74 and thus the liquid medium in the vessel causes the cutter 56 to lift from the position shown in Fig. 3 to that of Fig. 1 where it abuts cutter 30. Feed is via an inlet 22 and a plug is removed from an opening 24 for discharge of contents, or cleaning of the mill. The cutter 30 may be formed of metal or ceramic material and the cutter 56 of ceramic material.
