Abstract

1457571 Regulating fermentations GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 31 Jan 1974 4598/74 Heading C6F [Also in Division B1] In the conduct of aerobic fermentations, both the dissolved oxygen content of the culture medium and its temperature are monitored through the controlled addition to the medium of appropriate gases, the gas for oxygenation containing at least 20% oxygen by volume. Referring to Fig. 1, over cooling of the fermentation produced by the admission into the culture medium of oxygen or air through valve 12 is remedied by the controlled introduction of say, steam and nitrogen through valve 17. In the embodiment of Fig. 2, air is used to control the temperature of a fermentation by thermophilic organisms e.g. digestion of cellulosic materials at operating temperatures of 45-80‹C, against over-heating and the amount of air admitted is regulated by raising or lowering the skirt 34 of a draft tube 32 through which the air is drawn by a turbine impeller 31. Alternatively, the draft tube itself or the impeller may be moved. The oxygen concentration in the medium is monitored by oxygen controller 46 which regulates the supply of oxygen admitted through line 44 whereby to supplement that provided by the air drawn through the draft tube.
