Abstract

1457406 Sintering and impregnating steel powder compacts R J DAIN and H FORD 30 Nov 1972 [24 Nov 1972] 54334/72 Heading C7D Tool or alloy steel other than stainless steel powder is isostatically compacted to at least 80% theoretical density and then sintered in contact with an infiltrant metal e.g. Ag, Cu, Co or their alloys which fuses and impregnates the steel compact. The sintered impregnated compact is suitable for such finishing operations as surface dressing, machining, extrusion, forging and rolling. A carbide, nitride or oxide may be added to the steel powder and the compact may be vacuum deoxidized prior to or during sintering.
