Abstract
1457402 Ballast tamping machines CANRON Ltd-CANRON LIMITEE 14 Jan 1976 01663/74 Heading E1G A method of ballast tamping with a machine having a wheel mounted chassis 11 carrying front and rear tamping heads 15, 22 mounted for relative movement therebetween, comprises operating the heads in a sequence such that whilst the front head is tamping the rear head is moving towards the front head, and whilst the rear head is tamping the front head is moving away from the rear head. In this way the peak power demands of the front and rear heads are staggered. The operational sequence is as follows. The first head 15 is lowered into the ballast and squeezes it until a pressure sensitive switch 35 releases the squeezer and the front head is then raised, which initiates the lowering of the rear head 22 and starts the machine motor 13. The rear head 22 then squeezes the ballast, remaining stationary while the machine moves forward, until pressure sensitive switch 36 releases the squeeze and the rear head is then raised, which initiates the lowering of the front head and starts the carriage motor 25. Front and rear indexers 27, 28 halt the machine and carriage motors respectively when the correct ties are reached before the heads are lowered. The machine also includes cylinder operated means 30, 31 to lift and laterally shift the track which are operatively connected by control means L to the front indexer 27.
