1456829 Tocopheral derivatives F HOFFMANN-LA ROCHE & CO AG 21 Dec 1973 [22 Dec 1972] 22271/75 Divided out of 1456828 Heading C2V The invention comprises tocopherol derivatives of formula where R is anhydroxy group or an ether or ester group convertible into an hydroxy group, A is a hydrogen atom and B is an hydroxy group or A and B together represent an oxo group, m and n being zero or 1 with the proviso that the sum of m and n is 1. Compounds of Formula I are obtained by reacting an aldehyde of formula with a phosphorane of formula or with a phosphonate of formula where R 2 , R 3 and R 4 are aryl groups and R 5 and R 6 are aryloxy or alkoxy groups. Compounds of Formula II are obtained by reacting a compound of formula where Z is MgX or Li, X being halogen, with a compound of formula (where X is halogen) or with a compound of formula The compounds may be converted to alphatocopherol. Examples are given.
