Abstract
1456672 Grippers UNIROYAL Inc 30 Nov 1973 [29 Dec 1972] 55583/73 Heading B8H [Also in Division B7] A tyre building machine (see Div. B7) includes a radially expansible and contractible gripper ring 5 for use in conveying a breaker-tread assembly from a breaker-tread assembling drum 1 to a tyre carcass mounted on a tyre shaping mechanism S, the gripper ring 5 comprising: an annular cam ring 31, Fig. 4, rotatably mounted on a support means comprising ring members 30, 33; a plurality of arcuate ring segments 40 provided with cam followers 42 engaged in arcuate cam slots 32 of the cam ring 31 so that relative rotation between the cam ring 31 and the ring members 30, 33 moves the segments radially, inwardly or radially outwardly, the segments having radially inwardly directed faces 7 for engagement with the radially outer surface of the breaker-tread assembly; power cylinders 73, 74, Fig. 2, for effecting said relative rotation; and an adjustable control unit 100, Fig. 2, for adjustably limiting the extent of said relative rotation and of the resultant radial movements of the segments. The gripper ring 5 is movable from a position surrounding the drum 1 to a position surrounding the shaping mechanism S by means of a power cylinder 8 connected by a piston rod 8a to a sliding block 8b supporting the transfer ring. As shown, the segments 40 are generally T-shaped, each having arcuate bases 40a, Fig. 4, provided with a pair of prongs 66. Each segment is provided with a pair of guide rods 46 movably mounted in guide blocks 48. The adjustable control unit 100, Fig. 2, includes a limit switch 106 which engages a tongue (107), Fig. 8 (not shown), projecting from the cam ring 31 at the radially inward limit position of the segments. An adjustable bolt 108 is engaged by a bracket 103 in the position of the cam ring corresponding to the radially inward limit positions of the segments. The radially inward limit positions of the segments may be varied by moving the bracket 103 by means of a handle 102 and a threaded shaft 101. The adjustable control unit 100 is also provided with an adjustable bolt 122 which engages the tongue (107) to adjustably limit the radially outward movement of the segments. A counter (124), Fig. 7 (not shown), indicates the set position of the bracket 103.
