Abstract

1456637 Preparation of virus-infected fungi BEECHAM GROUP Ltd 19 Nov 1973 [24 Nov 1972] 54475/72 Heading C6F A mycelium of a fungus which reproduces via the formation of clamp connections is contacted with virus particles containing double-stranded RNA whilst the clamp connections are forming, thereby infecting at least some of the dicaryotic cells formed during the period of contact, and the infected cells are cultivated. The infected portions of fungus may be isolated for further cultivation. Contacting may be carried out on a solid or liquid medium, and if the liquid medium will not support fungal growth, the infected fungus may be then transferred to a more suitable medium. Virus particles may be derived from an infected strain of Penicillium chrysogenum, funiculosum or stoloniferum, or Aspergillus niger or foetidus and the fungus may be of the Basidiomycetes. The virus particles thus grown may be isolated.
