Abstract

1332381 Cultivating viruses BEECHAM GROUP Ltd 29 Feb 1972 [5 March 1971] 6067/71 Heading C6F Fungal protoplasts are contracted with double stranded RNA virus particles of fungal origin, in an aq. medium containing an osmotic stabilizer, so that some of them are infected, the infected protoplasts being cultivated. Preferably infection is ensured by contacting with 10-100 virus particles per protoplast. The virus may originate from the same strain, a different strain of the same species, or a strain of a different species of fungus. Protoplasts may be prepared by a treatment of the cells with enzyme(s) to dissolve the wall, which may be cellulosic, or chitinous and may contain a lipid. Examples describe the infection of Penicillium stoloniferum with a virus from a different strain, P-chrysogenum with a virus from the same strain, P-chrysogenum with a virus from P-stoloniferum, Marasmius and rosaceus with a virus from P-chrysogenum, Macor hiemalis with a virus from P- chrysogenum, and Aspergillus foetidus with a virus from P-chrysogenum. Other possibilities are listed in the text.
