Abstract

1456573 Paper making apparatus BELOIT CORP 7 March 1974 [8 March 1973] 10308/74 Heading D2A A headbox 10 for a paper-making machine has a slice chamber 12, extending non-linearly between a headbox chamber 11 and a slice opening 13, and a plurality of trailing elements 26 positioned within the slice chamber, the upstream ends of the elements 26 being attached to support means but their downstream ends being unsupported. Stock is first supplied into a tapered chamber 14 extending across 'the machine and thence passes into chamber 11 through a perforated plate 15. A baffle 17 skims off froth which is removed through an opening 18. The chamber 11 about baffle 17 is pressurised. The support means is preferably an apertured plate 24 to which rigid portions 30 of the elements 26 are attached by ball and socket joints. Intermediate rigid curved plastics portions 31 are attached to the portions 30, and flexible plastic portions 32 are attached to portions 31. The portions 32 have a density close to that of the stock. Although the portions 30 extend continuously across the width of the machine, the portions 32 may be divided across the machine into several strands. The upper slice lip 33 may be pivotally mounted such that jack 34 controls the slice gap.
