Abstract

1456520 Tape measure RABONE CHESTERMAN Ltd 12 Sept 1974 [21 Nov 1973] 54260/73 Heading G1M A tape measure comprising a rotatable hub 12, a tape drum 18 rotatably mounted on the hub, a winding handle pivotally mounted on the hub for movement between an inoperative position, Fig. 1 and an operative position and a clutch member 19 slidable within the hub, the arrangement being such that when the winding handle is moved to its operative position, a cam 16a on the handle moves the clutch member axially against the bias of a spring 21 so that a port 20 extending laterally from the clutch member through a slot in the hub engages teeth 18e on the drum to clutch the hub to the drum. As shown, a pair of ports 20 each engage teeth 18e during clutching. A brake member 22 co-operates with ratchet teeth (not shown) on the internal periphery of the rim 18a of the drum 18, the teeth including an arcuate cam shaped side so that during winding in of the tape, the brake member 22 is automatically moved to its non-operative position by a camming action.
