Abstract
1456441 Ball mills MINNESOTA MINING & MFG CO 19 Feb 1974 [20 Feb 1973] 7570/74 Heading B2A [Also in Division B3] A method of treating objects with partides moved by magnetic force comprises confining magnetic particles to a predetermined area, generating a rotating magnetic field whose axis of rotation is within the predetermined area, the field being of sufficient intensity to cause rotation of the particles on their axes and also to cause thetir rotation in an orbital path about the axis of rotation of the rotating field, and placing the object to be treated within the path of the particles for a period of time sufficient to cause surface treatment thereof. A device for producing the magnetic field may consist of at least four overlapping coils of insulated wire arranged in a circular pattern of opposed pairs 30a, 30b, 31a, 31b energised by two or more out of phase sources of alternating current. The coils may be wound on a slotted annulus or may be formed by the stator of an AC motor. A container 32 is disposed within the coils for retaining the magnetic particles. Alternatively, the coils may be disposed within a cylindrical container, the particles being exterior of the container and in the space between it and a larger coaxial container. The particles may be moved over a flat surface by forming the coils in slots in the end of a cylinder. In another arrangement, the rotating magnetic field is produced by rotating permanent magnets around or within a container. The particles are individual permanent magnets and may be of gamma iron oxide, hard barium ferrite, aluminium-nickel-cobalt alloys, or mixtures thereof, and have a size within the range 0.01 to 5 cm in diameter or larger, according to whether cleaning, grinding, polishing, or burnishing is to be effected. The particles may have an inert coating or an abrasive coating and be used in air or a liquid, such as water, kerosene, carbon tetrachloride, acetone, benzene, toluene, perchloroethylene. The liquid may contain abrasive particles, bactericides, pH regulators, alkaline builders, buffing agents, softeners or surfactants. The abrasive particles may be in the form of glass spheres. The magnetic particles have a magnetization of about 50 gauss/gm and a coercivity of at least 100 oerstads. An apparatus may be used for ball milling.
