Abstract

1456388 Cooling elongate material BOC INTERNATIONAL Ltd 10 July 1974 [26 June 1973] 30237/73 Heading D1L Elongate plastics or elastomeric material is cooled by passing the material through a chamber into which cryogenic liq. is introduced. As shown PVC strip 6 at a temp. of 30‹C is introduced at 8 into chamber 2 into which liq. N 2 is sprayed from headers 14, 16 and 18. The strip passes sinuously over rollers 10 and between A1 baffles 20 in countercurrent to falling vapour 22 and exits at 12. The cold vapour is exhausted at 24 and recycled to inlet 28. The flow of liq. N 2 to the spray headers is controlled by automatically operated solenoid valves. The valves are programmed so that (a) liq. N 2 is continuously passed through header 16 throughout the cooling operation, (b) liq. N 2 is only passed through header 18 when the temp. of the strip, measured by a thermocouple contacting the strip leaving the chamber or by an infra-red detector, rises above 0‹C, and (c) liq. N 2 is passed through header 14 when the chamber is cooled from ambient.
