Abstract

1456353 Immersion sampler LEEDS & NORTHRUP CO 16 April 1975 [6 May 1974] 15708/75 Heading B3F An immersion sampler for molten materials consists of a split mould body with mating parts recessed to define a sample cavity and flow passage for molten material with a porous refractory gasket, preferably fibrous material, between the mating parts. In an embodiment, a split mould 11, with identical halves 11a is assembled with a gasket 20 between the mating halves. The mould is made of ceramic material which will withstand the temperature of the molten material. The mould is constructed with an entrance port 11c leading to a Venturi 11d, which by virtue of its controlled throat 11d<SP>1</SP>, assists in the rapid chilling of the sample on withdrawal, consequently preventing flow-back of the sample. It also minimizes splashing and promotes homogeneity of the sample. Leading from the Venturi 11d to the sample cavity 11 h is a tubular runner 11e, the smoothness of the surface of which is improved by the presence of a heat resistant glass tube 15. The sample mould is vented through a groove 11i and through the porous gasket 20. A recess 11b at the entrance port 11c may be sealed off with a fusible disc 17, which may be a deoxidizer, i.e. Al, in the sampling of steel. A fusible cap 12 may be placed over the immersion end of the sampler to prevent ingress of slag, if present on the molten material, and further deoxidants may be placed in the Venturi 11d if required. The sampler may be contained immersion end down in a cardboard holder 13, with a handle 14 in order to plunge it into the material to be sampled.
