Abstract

1455707 Linkwork L C H JUY 12 Dec 1973 [12 Dec 1972] 57695/73 Heading F2K [Also in Division B7] A control device, e.g. for a cycle speed change mechanism, comprises a lever 1 pivotably mounted on a sleeve 5 for moving a control member 4, a coil spring 6 mounted on the sleeve 5 coaxially therewith and having one end 6<SP>1</SP> fast for rotation with the lever, a spindle 2 carrying the sleeve 5, and a ring 7 slidably mounted on the spindle and keyed against rotation, the ring bearing against, and thus restraining rotation of, the other end of the spring. In operation the spring 6 is caused to uncoil from the sleeve 5 by lever movement in one direction resulting in tightening of the turns of the spring against one another so that a position is eventually reached in which the lever is prevented from moving. When the lever is moved in the reverse direction the turns of the spring tighten on the sleeve so that a position is reached in which the lever is again prevented from moving. In the illustrated embodiment the ring 7 is urged against the spring end and sleeve 5 by an elastic domed washer 8 forced against the ring by a screw 81 screwed into the spindle 2. The spindle 2 is secured to a collar 3 for attachment to a cycle frame tube. The collar may carry two of the control devices (Fig. 1, not shown).
