Abstract

1455461 Decorative laminates WIGGINS TEAPE RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT Ltd 1 Feb 1974 [20 Feb 1973] 8316/73 Heading B5N A decorative laminate is produced by bringing a decorative paper sheet impregnated with a thermosetting resin into face to face contact with a support which is also impregnated with thermosetting resin at least adjacent its surface in contact with the decorative paper sheet, the decorative surface of the sheet facing outwards, and applying heat and pressure, e.g. using stainless steel plates, to effect lamination by thermosetting of the resin, the decorative paper sheet having been prepared by coating an un-impregnated paper sheet with a coating mix containing a coloured pigment and a thermosetting resin, thereby to produce a decorative surface and to impregnate the sheet with thermosetting resin, and drying the coated paper. The coating mix, which may be applied to the paper using a reverse roll coating apparatus, may comprise, as thermosetting resin, melamine-formaldehyde resin, a mixture of urea-formaldehyde resin and melamine-formaldehyde resin, or unsaturated polyester resin, a diluent, e.g. water which may contain a solvent compatible with the thermosetting resin, e.g. ethyl alcohol, isopropyl alcohol or methylated spirits, which assists penetration of the resin of the coating mix into the paper, and a loading material, e.g. titanium dioxide. The opposite surface of the paper may also be coated with thermosetting resin and the paper may be further impregnated with thermosetting resin. An overlay paper sheet impregnated with melamine-formaldehyde resin and optionally printed on the reverse side with a decorative design, may be placed over the decorative paper sheet, the overlay sheet being made transparent during lamination. The support may comprise a plurality of superimposed thermosetting resin impregnated paper sheets, the layer sheets preferably being of Kraft paper impregnated with phenol-formaldehyde resin and the upper sheet adjacent the decorative paper sheet being of Kraft paper impregnated with melamineformaldehyde resin. Alternatively the support may comprise a base layer of chipboard having superimposed thereon a sheet of Kraft paper impregnated with melamine-formaldehyde resin, or a fibre mat made by draining a dispersion of fibres and powdered resin on the foraminous support of a papermaking machine, and drying the web so produced.
