Abstract
1,230,817. Laminates. KIMBERLY-CLARK CORP. 20 June, 1968 [22 June, 1967; 26 Sept., 1967], No. 29488/68. Headings B5A and B5N. [Also in Division B2] A disposable impression sheet for use in the formation of embossed decoration fibreboard and like panels comprises a flexible heat-stable web carrying a continuous release coating on one side and on the other side in a predetermined configuration a discontinuous coating of a substantially non-compressible material in a threedimensional pattern. The web may be (i) embossed so that portions of it project below the original surface level thereof in areas coextensive with the discontinuous coating, the portions being filled to the level of the original surface with the non-compressible material; or (ii) substantially planar and the discontinuous coating bonded thereto in sufficient thickness to rise above the original surface. The non- compressible material may comprise a mixture of kaolin clay (16 to 85%) and a cured thermosetting resin (15 to 35%), e.g. phenol-, urea-, or melamine-formaldehyde, or an epoxy resin, and may include microscopic-sized glass beads (up to 60%). Other non-compressible fillers are wood flour and fine minerals. The release coating may be a low-cohesive strength parting coat, e.g. of a mixture of bentonite clay and talc and the flexible web an alkaline-sized paper, e.g. paper sized with an alkylketene dimer prepared from long chain fatty acids, or a thin metal foil, e.g. aluminium foil. Alternatively, the web may be of a material impervious to the flow therethrough of heat-activated thermosetting resin, e.g. glassine paper, vegetable parchment paper, thin metal foil, and the release coating of silicone, fluorocarbon, tetrafluoroethylene resin. The impression sheet is interposed between a plain smooth-surfaced caul plate or press platen and a wet-form fibre mat, e.g. of cellulose fibres, or a plurality of sheets of paper impregnated with a phenolic resin, or a single sheet of α-cellulose or regenerated cellulose paper impregnated with an amino-triazine-aldehyde, e.g. melamineformaldehyde, or polyester resin, the assembly compressed to produce a laminate or fibreboard having the pattern of the impression sheet reproduced on its surface. The impression sheet may be removed or left in position for protection of the surface.
