Abstract

A metal-faced laminated material for use as a die for moulding resinous compositions or laminates is made by interposing a metal foil between a pattern-producing sheet or surface and a stack of paper or fabric sheets impregnated with a thermo-setting resin, hot-pressing to cure the resin, and removing the cured die from the pattern-producing sheet or surface. The pattern-producing sheet may be a fabric, e.g. an open-weave fabric, lace, wire mesh, or an embossed or engraved plate; it may be composite, consisting, e.g., of a metal foil over an open weave fabric, or of a patterned top sheet to produce a design super-imposed on a background pattern. Adhesion of the metal foil to the stack may be ensured by coating it with an adhesive such as a blend of a polyvinyl acetal resin such as the butyral with a thermosetting phenol-aldehyde resin. Aluminium foils may be anodised and coated with a hardenable resin as described in Specification 587,536, [Group VIII]. The die may be surfaced with two aluminium foils, the inner one being anodised and resin-treated on both sides; the outer one, which is not anodised or resin-treated, may be brush-finished. The die may be prepared with a relief surface on both sides, of the same or different designs. Specifications 145,123, [Class 140], and 414,632 also are referred to.
