1454819 Fraction collector ELDEX LABORATORIES Inc 2 Oct 1974 [15 Oct 1973] 42826/74 Heading G1B A fraction collector comprises Fig 4, a body 18 having a lower planar surface 26 and a plurality of equi-size upwardly-opening liquid-receiving chambers 28 disposed in uniformly spaced relation along and having equal dimensions along a spiral path about a central point on the body, a base 12 having means such as capstan 14 for mounting body 18 for rotation about the central point, a carriage 34, Fig. 3 and means on the base 12 for constraining the carriage for movement on a radial path below the lower surface 26 of body 18, drive wheel 54 mounted in the carriage for rotation about a radially disposed axis and having its periphery in contact with surface 26, means 70 mounted in the carriage for rotatively driving drive wheel 54, and hence body 18 at substantially constant speed, an arm having a first end 94 fixed to the carriage, part of the arm over-lying the upper surface of the carriage and being in substantial vertical alignment with drive wheel 54, this overlying arm part, when the fraction collector is in use to collect chromatography effluent carrying effluent dispenser tube T, and means for moving the carriage along its radial path, as drive wheel 54 rotates body 18 so that end 96 of the arm follows the spiral path along which chambers 28 are arranged. In the embodiment shown, the carriage-moving means comprises Fig. 3 a flexible tension member 82 having one end fixed to the carriage at 84 and the other end fixed to capstan 14, member 82 passing around a rotatable sheave 86 fixed to the carriage so that as capstan 14 is rotated, tension member 82 is wound on to a spool-like portion of the capstan and the carriage is drawn radially inwardly. The carriage is biased to its radially outward position by springs (50, 52) which abut support plate 44 of the carriage.
