Abstract

1454437 Drawing can bodies GULF & WESTERN MFG CO 30 July 1974 [8 April 1974] 33612/74 Headings B3A and B3Q Can bodies &c. are wall-ironed in a machine having a frame supporting a reciprocating punch and at least one ironing ring, the punch being on a slide provided with guide bar means. In the horizontal machine described there are two drawing mandrels 88 each aligned with an assembly D of ironing dies, the mandrels being mounted on a slide operated, through a connecting rod 70, crank-shaft 44 and flywheel 54, by a motor 40. Drive for a can-discharge turret G is taken off the crank-shaft by a belt 60 and transmitted through a gear-box 64 and shaft 66 to an indexing device. After passing through the ironing dies the ends of the blanks are domed against end-forming die assemblies E which may be pivoted into an inoperative position. Blanks are fed to the machine at F. Slide and mandrel mounting.-A bar 102, Fig. 4, of square section is fixed to each side of the slide 86 and carries bronze bearings 110, 112, 114 running in channel members 122 mounted on the machine frame 10. Integral extensions 104 at the forward ends of the bars 102 run in guides 146, Fig. 3, and covers 156. A screw threaded shank 168, Fig. 5, or a socket on each mandrel 88 is recieved in the slide by a socket 178 or shank which is rotatable by worm gearing 186. A tapering collar 172 on the mandrel engages a similar washer 204 for effecting alignment. Ironing dies 226, 228, 230, Figs. 7A and 9, between blocks 218, 220, 222 are pressed by plungers 254 against supporting eccentrics 272, 274 turnable, through worm-gearing 300 (340), by shafts 296 (332) to effect horizontal and/or vertical adjustment of the dies which may be removed after opening of a hinged cover-plate 232. Spring-biased plungers 308 bear on capstans 302 on the shafts 296 (332). A base-plate 214 to which the blocks 218-222 are fixed by a key and screws is adjustable about a pivot 370 by a screw (384), Fig. 8 (not shown), to align the die assembly before tightening clamps 398. End-forming dies 410, Fig. 15, are surrounded by ejector rings 438 and biased towards the mandrels 88 by pistons 418. Compressed-air is supplied behind the pistons 418 and rings 438. The end-forming dies are mounted on a bridge 404 which is pivoted at one end and clamped at the other to a pair of cylinders which receive the bars 104 at the end of their stroke. Adjustable stop-collars 426 limit retraction of the dies 410. Cans are discharged into pockets 502, Fig. 16, in a wheel 484 which is indexed in steps of 60 degrees so as to transfer the cans to a ramp 506. Strippers (508), Fig. 13 (not shown), remove the cans from the mandrels during return strokes of the mandrels. Specifications 1,454,438 and 1,454,439 are referred to.
