Abstract

1454302 Recovering polymers from cellular polymers RUBBER & PLASTICS RESEARCH ASSOCIATION OF GREAT BRITAIN 15 March 1974 [16 March 1973] 12706/73 Heading C3P Non-cellular polymers of ethylenically unsaturated monomers are made by contacting the cellular polymer with the vapour of a refluxing solvent whereby the vapour condenses on the cellular polymer, dissolves a portion thereof and the resultant solution returns to the liquid phase of the refluxing solvent. In the drawing, styrene (A) is heated in a Z blade mixer (B) with steam to produce vapour which rises up the feed shoot (C) to dissolve cellular polystyrene which is introduced via hatch (F) and forced down (C) by a ram (E) below the condenser coil (D). The solvent is boiled off to leave a concentrated polystyrene solution which may be granulated or comminuted, or if the styrene contains a peroxide the solution may be polymerized. Cellular polymethylmethacryl or polyvinylchloride may be dissolved in an acrylic monomer.
