Abstract

1454020 Valves COPES-VULCAN Inc 31 Oct 1974 [14 Nov 1973] 47195/74 Heading F2V The flow path through a valve 10 includes a plurality of stacked discs 30 constructed so that fluid may flow from the inner to outer rims between each pair of adjacent discs. Each disc has upwardly projecting ribs 52, 54, 56, 58 and downwardly projecting ribs 51, 53, 55, 57 and 59, the ribs having notches to provide the flow paths between the inner and outer rims of the stack. The notches may be staggered or arranged to form straight radial paths at an angle of 9 degrees to one another, each radial path on the lower face of a disc lying midway between a pair of paths on the upper face. The notches may also be arranged to provide radially divergent paths when the valve is to be used with a compressible fluid, e.g. steam. Flow may take place in either direction through the discs and the space above the closure member 40 is provided with a pressure-equalizing passage 15. Alternatively, the closure member may be fitted with a sealing ring and have its upper and lower faces connected by an equalizing hole. The discs are accommodated in a retainor 44 having apertures 46.
