Abstract

A cylindrical throttle body is constituted by a pack of annular discs any one of which has annular grooves in a face of the disc which are in radially and axially spaced apart engagement with respective ribs on the confronting face of an adjacent disc thereby creating between radially successive pairs of ribs and grooves a labyrinthine flow path. The valve member is a piston movable axially in the body to progressively open or close the paths between the respective discs. The ribs and grooves may be dimensioned for the flow area to become progressively larger in the direction of flow.
