Abstract

1453640 Strip of fasteners EXXON RESEARCH & ENG CO 27 Feb 1974 [12 March 1973 (2)] 8862/74 Heading B8C An article comprises a plurality of fastening elements arranged in a preselected configuration and held together in that configuration by a flexible binder composition comprising a C 2 to Cs - olefin polymer having a MFR of from 1 to 20 grafted with from 1 to 20 weight per cent of a graft component formed from an unsaturated carboxylic acid, or a derivative thereof, wherein said binder has been applied as a tape, film, powder or a combination thereof and wherein said binder is firmly adhered to the surfaces of fastening elements because of the adhesive functionality imparted by said graft component. The fastening elements may be nails or wire staples made of ferrous, aluminium, glass-fibre reinforced or copper material. Examples are given in which the article shown in Fig. 4 is made by placing nails together in a jig, applying to each side of the nail configuration a tape made of polyethylene and ethylene-propylene copolymer, both of which are grafted with acrylic acid and heating the assembly. The steel nails are replaced with glass-fibre reinforced thermoplastic rods, aluminium rods or copper wires, the tape in the last instance being made of ethylene polymer and butyl rubber, the composition being grafted with acrylic acid. Wire staple elements are arranged similarly or by covering them with a fine powder in place of the tape.
